(This contest has ended, but you can read the answers here.)

We all love a mystery, don’t we? But our readers especially seem to like our mystery photo contests, so we thought we would try another one. This time, we have upped the ante with 15 new puzzlers for your consideration.

As usual, the entrant with the best overall submission will be the winner. Please get your submissions in by midnight (Central time) Monday, October 21, 2013.

The winner gets a copy of the CERA book A Rainbow of Traction.

Some of you seem to prefer writing about your guesses on public forums. You do so at your own risk. You might just provide another entrant with the winning answer.

Good luck figuring out our puzzlers, which are all from the Chicago area this time.

  1. Photo 14 looks like Wilmette Avenue and Railroad Avenue with some CRT brown cars.

  2. 14, Greenleaf Ave. and Poplar St. 12 Greenleaf Ave and ? Both in Evanston #1 Stockyards el crossing C&WI #7 Funeral car

  3. Picture 4 was of the vehicle that started out as a Twin Coach Model 58-DW, but was rebuilt as an ETB ca. 1949, running for CTA as a demo, and later purchased. Its first Chicago number was 999, but ended up as 9763. It’s still up at IRM, and a copy of the only production order of this kind of bus, one of the Omaha 1200’s, is at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, ME(please e-mail me for pix…I was up there on 10/12/13). The picture was probably a 1949 photo, since the bus is not yet numbered.
Picture 6 was of Cook County Hospital Car #1, a special car used by Cook County Hospital way back when.
Picture 8 was taken on State Street near Lake, probably during the Christmas season of 1951(“An American in Paris is playing in the Chicago Theater on the right, which makes the year rather obvious.) AFA the snow…well, it may gladden some hearts…for me, having experienced the last 4 Christmases in Palm Bay, FL, I think I’ll take temperatures pushing 75 degrees over snow ANYTIME.
Picture 13 looks like it’s on the PRW along the IC Electric…I’m thinking South of 119th and Michigan. Since we’ve established that I’m from Philadelphia, PA, I’m probably wrong on the street location.

The movie is playing at the State-Lake theater.

  4. Very curious about some of these pics.

  5. picture #8: This is the north terminus for RT4 Cottage Grove as the car in the foreground begins turning off State St. onto E. Lake St. in this south facing view. At the right is the State-Lake theater featuring the 1951 release “An American in Paris” as mentioned above.
